When fast turning is required: clutches for high-speed applications 01 The backlash-free and torsionally rigid Roba-DS disk pack couplings compensate for radial, axial and angular shaft misalignments. The demands on speed and dynamics are constantly increasing in modern test stands. If collisions occur at high speeds, they can cause severe damage. For this reason, these high-speed applications in particular require overload protection which is tailored to the high requirements. AUTOMATION Whether for motors, gearboxes or pumps – dynamometers are an integral part of modern production. With these component and function test stands, the entire range of stresses and strains on the drive line and its components can be simulated realistically. To do this, high-precision systems are used – from the drive to the measurement flange and the shaft. And also the torque limiter, which protects test pieces and measuring units from damage due to overload, must match these qualities in its design. An imprecise clutch, which influences the measuring system, makes evaluation in the test field difficult. The measurement result would be falsified. In addition, the safety of people and machines is an important factor in high-speed applications. The torque limiter must release reliably at the right time, otherwise collisions at high speeds could cause serious damage. “Only with the right clutch, the protection makes sense. There is no one clutch for all applications”, explains Ralf Epple, Product Manager at mayr power transmission. “This is the reason why we have a very large product range of standard products in our portfolio from which customers can choose. They are the result of many years of experience.” Cooperation with scientists Just recently, the company has extended its proven EAS-HSE highspeed clutch by new sizes. “We are now offering torque limiters for high-speed applications with torques from 30 Nm to 30,000 Nm and speeds of 25,000 rpm for small and 8,000 rpm for large construction sizes”, adds Epple. “Despite e-mobility, we have noticed a kind of Author: Ralf Epple, Product Manager at Mayr power transmission, Mauerstetten, Germany speed maximum at 25,000 rpm to 30,000 rpm for industrial test stands. However, in the area of research and development, where we cooperate with universities and other research institutes, or in motor sports, there are projects with speeds well above 30,000 rpm. We use the experiences gained from these projects to permanently further develop our standard range. Of course, we also keep an eye on lower speed values here.” Low mass, high rigidity If in a test stand the torque exceeds the limit value set on the torque limiter, the clutch disengages and separates the input and output within fractions of a second. After an overload occurrence, the measurement shaft therefore has to be recalibrated at worst, any further expensive damage to the drive line or test piece, however, is prevented reliably by the torque limiter. The EAS-HSE high-speed torque limiting clutches by mayr power transmission transmit the torque backlash-free and with high torsional rigidity. They are compact, have a high performance density and a low mass moment of inertia. This is the result of a small outer diameter in combination with a relatively large bore diameter. And also the integrated elements, via which the torque is transmitted on the EAS-HSE clutch, are specially selected. Ultimately, the following applies for the design: Bore diameter, outside diameter and element size must be harmonious in order to obtain a low-vibration system that functions precisely in the event of actuation. For accurate measurement results In addition to torque limiters, shaft misalignment compensation couplings are a decisive accessory in test stands, as they minimize the interference parameters affecting the measurement flange. 16 WORLD OF INDUSTRIES 2020

Such interference parameters or so-called parasitic forces frequently occur due to alignment errors in the drive line. For this reason, misalignments between the input and the output sides occur in almost all applications. Shaft misalignment compensation couplings are therefore used together with the measurement flange. Based on the tried and tested backlash-free and torsionally rigid ROBA-DS construction series, mayr power transmission offers a version of its compensation coupling specially adapted to measurement flanges, which creates ideal conditions for accurate measurement results. These disk pack couplings transmit the torque backlash-free and extremely torsionally rigid and they compensate for transverse and axial forces as well as for bending torques. They therefore not only ensure accurate measurement results, but also provide the best possible protection for the measurement flange, the mechanically weakest link in the drive line, thus ensuring a long service lifetime. In addition to their high running smoothness and low mass moment of inertia, the couplings are characterized by a high balance quality; and they are particularly robust and resistant. “In addition to these measurement flange couplings, we are also working on other mass-optimized measurement flange couplings, for example made of aluminum or titanium,” says Ralf Epple, giving an insight into the current developments. “Here, however, it is always necessary to weigh up between the material properties, e.g. weight, rigidity or fatigue strength, and the final customer application, i.e. the actual speeds, load alterations, load cycles, bearing distances and bore diameters. And last but not least, of course, the price/performance ratio also counts.
