EDITORIAL Growth drivers – regional and global Dear readers, The use of mobile terminal devices is nearly ubiquitous, not just in the consumer segment, but in industry as well. It follows the trend of digitalization, one of the key growth drivers in many sectors. Digitalization allows for progressively closer integration of processes and the flexibility the market demands for producing individual products in batch sizes as small as a single unit. It raises communication and data transfer to a new level beyond corporate and national boundaries where machines and systems “learn” to organize and optimize the use of raw materials and resources. Robots and tools collect information and communicate with a control unit, which in turn instructs robots or adjusts tools – automatically, reliably and accurately. At the end of the value-added chain there is still the maintenance of machines and systems, which also benefits from the data that is collected, very much in line with predictive maintenance. Digital transformation is thus a growth driver not only for the industry, but also of the world economy. The need for products to increase networking is growing worldwide. We can therefore remain optimistic, despite the uncertainties associated with Brexit and various decisions of the US government. In terms of internationalization, Germany and China – its most important trading partner with about 187 billion euros – are maintaining their cooperation in the Industry 4.0 / Made in China 2025 sector. This is also borne out by current innovation partnerships between numerous well-known German companies in the automation, logistics and drive technology sectors. They will not only be attending one of the leading trade fairs for Integrated Automation and Motion & Drives, IAMD Beijing 2018 (May 9 - 11, 2018), but also presenting their latest developments. In this edition of World of Industries we report about the fascination of China, trends and developments in industry and economics and the key topics of IAMD Beijing. We hope you enjoy reading this edition! Nicole Steinicke Deputy-editor-in-chief
