EDITORIAL Motion, Drive and Automation Country of the Superlatives Dear reader, China has been the second-largest economy in the world, before Japan, since 2010; since 2013, it has been the largest trading nation. China also holds the highest foreign currency reserves at approx. 3.8 Tn USD. Chinese foreign trade grew more than tenfold over the last twelve years. Exports grew by 7.9 % in 2013, imports by 7.3 %. The commercial balance sheet surplus grew to roughly 260 Bn. USD or 2.5 % of the gross domestic product. China is the export world champion, before the USA and Germany. Development is continuing– e.g. with a growth of the Chinese economy by 7.7 % in 2013. The two-digit growth rates of the past years cannot be repeated currently, but the figures are still very high by international comparison. This development, however, also leaves its traces and the rapid growth is bringing some severe social and ecological problems that must be controlled. The current government is putting together a development model to trigger sustainable and pervasive reformation that in turn is the prerequisite for new growth. Key subjects include social justice and participation of all classes, where possible, in the further economic and social development. China is facing massive tasks: to remain competitive, its economy must become more modern. Substantial reforms are required. Therefore the goal is to restructure the Chinese economy from an investment- and exportorientated to an innovation-driven one more strongly aligned with the inland market. Chinese engineering already supporting this process positively is not only reflected by the turnover growths of 12 to 16 % or the current forecasts of the China Machinery Industry Federation (CMIF) at 10 to 15. When the PTC trade fair Asia opens its gates in Shanghai on 27 October 2014, more than 1,300 companies will once again present their latest developments. More still: China will present itself as a good host and partner of global industry. This issue will tell you what this important event has in store for you. There will also be plenty of new technologies again – from the world of Motion, Drives and Automation. Have fun reading!
