INTRALOGISTICS

INTRALOGISTICS Intralogistics at Bio Express The goods must be cooled without interruption to the customer’s doorstep. To ensure that expiration dates can be strictly observed and monitored, goods must be stored according to the FIFO principle. Goods in intermediate storage should also be stored between 2 and 7 °C and should be moved to the next or final destination on the same day or on the following day at the latest. 02 “Click and collect”: Customers order their products on the internet and pick them up in the supermarket same low in-store prices. The company has set up pods (collection points) in 120 British and 20 East European markets. Expiration date is in focus Another equally important aspect of the food and beverage industry is the expiration date. This date on prepackaged goods indicates the date until which a product can be consumed without significantly compromising on taste or quality if properly stored. Other criteria, for example the appearance, odor and external features of unpackaged foods such as fruits and vegetables determine how long goods can be sold while meeting customer requirements. This time span depends primarily on how goods are handled logistically along the value-added chain and especially on whether the recom- The Solution n FIFO storage of fruit and vegetables in crates or cardboard boxes. n Employees pick the order directly into the customers’ baskets. n Empty baskets move back to the loading side on a return level. The Benefits n Simple monitoring of best-before dates. n Continuous availability of fresh produce to end customers. n Ergonomic order picking by making use of the natural reach curve of order pickers. n Effective order picking by separating loading and retrieval aisles. n The new solution triples picking quantities. mended storage temperature has been maintained. Any intralogistics solution must therefore meet the following demands: n Temperature controlled storage and transport of foods. n A traceable storage and retrieval solution for goods based on the FIFO principle (first in / first out). n Monitoring of best-before dates, batches and production series. n Permanent access to all items on stock. n Fast supply to ensure constant availability of goods for distribution of food. A dynamic expiration date – meaning that the best-before date can be dynamically adjusted depending on storage conditions – is still a dream of the future. Presently, optimum cooling is important for maximum shelf life. One solution would be RFID transponders combined with measuring devices to record external conditions along the value added chain such as temperatures, exposure to light and other indicators of product deterioration (for example gases allowing conclusions about the degree of fruit ripeness). The consequence: Reducing the best-before date, for example if products have been exposed to unfavorable temperatures along the logistical chain (Image 03). Simple monitoring of best-before dates Bito also provides various solutions for this business sector. A fruit and vegetable farmer from South Tyrol who offers his products directly to consumers now benefits from a solution ensuring that end consumers are always supplied with fresh produce.
