EDITORIAL Into the shopping cart “Industry 4.0”, “Big Data”, “Smart Factory”: The world is becoming increasingly intelligent, interconnected and digital. The trend towards e-commerce is also continuing. According to a current study conducted on behalf of the Deutscher Verband der Internetwirtschaft [German Association of the Internet Sector], the e-commerce market in Germany will grow by 12% per year up to 2019. Specifically, this means sales growth from € 33.1 to € 57.9 billion (2015 to 2019). The continually growing e-commerce sector is also a topic at CeMAT Russia 2016 that will be held in Moscow from September 20 to 22. Internet sales in 2015 increased by nearly seven per cent to 760 billion ruble. According to a study conducted by the Internet trade association (AKIT) and postal service in Russia, additional growth of around 11.8% to 850 billion ruble is expected in 2016. If current results of the statistic portal, Statista, are taken into consideration the e-commerce sector in Russia is expected to achieve a market volume of € 19,618.00 million in 2020. This equates to an annual sales growth rate of 11 percent (CAGR 2016-2020). According to the Internet portal, the fashion sector takes up pole position. A sales volume of € 3,606.6 million has been predicted for this year. Our current issue of f+h Intralogistics examines the topic of e-business without placing as much emphasis on the figures. The delivery promises of suppliers are also particularly important at times of continually increasing online trade. This means that customers expect to receive their goods on time and at the required location, while also adhering to the correct specifications and providing an adequate quality. Efficient logistic solutions, ranging from warehousing through to sorting and transport must be provided to meet these requirements. These solutions must be adaptable, be able to overcome complexities and ensure that efficiency can be improved. Experts in the intralogistics sector have also done their research. The mail order company and service provider, the Beumer Group, for example, is supplying the corresponding sorting and distribution technology. During an interview with the Senior Manager Systems at Vanderlande, Jan van der Velden, our editorial team learnt about trends, which in addition to the electronic trade, have an impact on the business of Vanderlande. Thus it can be concluded that regardless of whether it relates to the e-commerce sector in Russia or Germany, customers will only continue to shop virtually if suppliers can also meet their delivery promise in future.
